JSP key Areas of Focus

Education

Somalia’s education system—critical to the nation’s future—has been severely disrupted by two decades of conflict, drought, and flooding. These crises have led to limited access, widespread inequality, and poor quality of education, driven by underqualified teachers, fragmented curricula, weak infrastructure, and low service capacity.

Juba Social Protection (JSP) focusses on expanding access to quality education for children and youth, with a focus on marginalized communities.

Shelter and Protection

Juba Social Protection (JSP) focusses on supporting displaced populations with safe shelter and safeguarding vulnerable groups from exploitation and abuse. Also, in partnership with both local and international actors, plays a critical role in supporting the development of Somalia’s social protection systems. As humanitarian needs continue to rise, funding gaps remain a serious concern—especially in the face of growing conflict, climate crises, and systemic fragility.

Health and Nutrition

Currently, significant gaps exist in access to health and nutrition services, particularly in remote villages. There is an absence of mobile health and nutrition teams across all assessed locations, although private pharmacies are available. Health facilities are limited and often overwhelmed, with the only functional facility located in the main town. This has contributed to high levels of acute malnutrition, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks such as AWD.

WASH Programme

In terms of WASH conditions, around 70% of households rely on unsafe water sources, including unprotected wells, river water, and surface water. Over 80% of households practice open defecation due to the lack of latrines, which significantly increases public health risks. As a consequence, there is a high prevalence of waterborne diseases, including acute watery diarrhea (AWD), particularly during periods of flooding and water contamination.

Juba Social Protection (JSP) is focused in improving access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education to prevent disease outbreaks. Our Emergency Programs

Relief

Any nation’s foundation is its educational system. The difficulties the education sector is currently facing are a direct result of the long-lasting disasters caused by conflict, drought, and flooding during the previous 20 years. The several catastrophes have collectively had a substantial influence on Somalia’s educational systems and the lives of children and youth. The industry is experiencing formidable obstacles, including as pervasive unfairness and limited access.

Juba Social Protection (JSP) has supplied schools and classroom equipment, teaching materials, and instructional support to schools who are unable to afford operational expenditures.

Shelter NFI

Our Shelter & NFI Program provides emergency shelter assistance and essential household items to displaced families and vulnerable communities affected by conflict and disasters across Somalia.

Many families continue to live in overcrowded settlements without adequate protection from harsh weather, insecurity, and health risks. To restore safety, dignity, and stability, Juba Social Protection (JSP) supports affected households with emergency shelters and critical non-food items such as blankets, mosquito nets, hygiene kits, kitchen utensils, solar lamps, and shelter materials.

Emergency Response

Juba Social Protection (JSP)’s Emergency Response Program delivers rapid and coordinated humanitarian assistance to communities affected by droughts, floods, disease outbreaks, conflict, and mass displacement across Somalia. Our trained emergency teams respond quickly to save lives and reduce suffering by providing urgent support to vulnerable populations in times of crisis.

Our emergency interventions include rapid needs assessments, emergency food assistance, clean water supply, sanitation services, temporary shelter support, protection services, psychosocial support, and health and nutrition assistance. Working closely with government institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, and local communities, JSP ensures timely and effective humanitarian response while promoting community participation, accountability, and protection to help affected communities recover and rebuild resilient futures.
